I was wondering if there were thoughts on using Slack or Gitter to open up a constant chat available to October users?

Just thinking ot would be useful for people new to October to pick the brains of others, and other people to go in depth with conversations on things.

There is already an IRC channel for October. For anyone not already familiar with IRC, there's a Live Chat page in the support section.

+1 for Slack.

It's absolutely better for chatting in Slack for many reasons:

  • this is more useful as oldshool IRC;
  • every developer using it;
  • it claims to be the industry standard for communication in communities
  • etc.

Contrary to your belief, not every developer is using Slack. It's great for small teams and internal stuff, but it's not really designed for large communities. I fail to see how it's "more useful [than] oldschool IRC", too.

Larachat goes some way to prove that. They're already reaching the maximum user limit for free accounts, and most of the registered accounts aren't even used. Slack's a good idea in theory, but it simply doesn't work as well for large communities.

Oh, and the web app is slow as heck and eats a huge chunk of resources - not helped by browsers being greedy. Most IRC clients don't have this problem, and never will.

-1 for Slack and Gitter. Slack is build for small team, and Gitter is not perfect.

+1 for Discord, free. And it's allow voice support. It's like Slack, but more powerful, and completely free. It will also support game overlay :D.

I don't think that IRC is good, because it's not "user friendly".

IRC is a protocol, like the internet itself, it belongs to nobody. Slack, Gitter, Hipchat, Flowdock, and others are all the rave at the moment. October in general avoids the trends and brings the best from the past to the future. However, we are in no position to tell you not to use something new and cool. So if you want to use Gitter, start a Gitter room. It's really that simple.

The channel is hosted to a server, that can be closed at any time.

The one think I don't like about IRC is there is no formating...

FelixINX, the IRC server is interchangeable.

If formatting is the one thing that displeases you, I'd argue your priorities are in the wrong order ;)

IRC does support formatting, it just depends what client you use. You don't need large colourful fonts and underlines to communicate effectively, though. Still, it's all down to personal opinion. If you need formatting that badly, you'll be able to find a client that supports what you're looking for.

I like using slack more. But I guess it's a subjective matter of taste. There are some really good points regarding learning curve though.

Anyway, you can still connect to slack with IRC.

-1 please, irc is well proven and real developers use irc. The rest is just hype, nonsense and will be gone in a matter of years, whilst IRC has withstood the test of time since as long as I can remember

I just use both , but I really like the ability to paste code, pin items, history without bot ...
