Is there a way to change the admin URL? I see this plugin as an option: https://octobercms.com/plugin/romanov-bsbip though ideally I'd like to not have to load up my install with plugins if I don't have to.

Just go to /config/cms.php and change 'backendUri' => '/backend', to whatever you want...

I changed that and nothing happened. Also clearned the artisan cache as well as renamed the modules/backend folder (which threw errors).

Is there anything else that has to be done?

You do not need to rename anything. Just change backendUri value to your desired one and try clearing your browser cache.
