It would be handy if the date selected for a post was in the future and published was checked, then the post wouldn't actually be published until that day.

Are you saying you see the post in a list view somewhere? Or are you assuming some random user might be able to guess a blog posts slug url that has not been listed anywhere? (which I find to be entirely implausible honestly)
