Hello!

I'd like to just start off I have experience with bare HTML/CSS/PHP. I've done my research as I want to sort of setup backend to simple websites I want to create. Thus, why I'm having a hard time deciding between Laravel vs OctoberCMS, as i'm not experienced and don't know what's best for me to start off and learn.

Here's roughly what I would be doing, creating simple web landing web pages, possibly integrating user/login system and most importantly setting up contact forms for generating leads or the obvious, contacting the owner.. other misc stuff like implementing newsletter system, setting up a mail server and what not.

I'm not sure if I was clear on my goal, but landing page, form to possibly generate leads, and possibly a user/login system for let's say a blog.

Thank you in advance, I apologize if this is a fairly stupid question but I'm struggling getting just some of that starting helping.

October is based on Laravel and consists of a number of improvements that build on Laravel. I would say that you need to decide between options such as WordPress or OctoberCMS.

If your needs are fairly simple and can be easily filled by existing plugins within the WP community without extra backend development, I would consider that. However, if your needs are likely to evolve to be more complex and require custom backend development to fit your requirements I would consider OctoberCMS over WP.

As far as the other stuff goes, I would highly recommend that you do not roll your own mail server, use a service like Mailgun or SendGrid.

If you would like more information / assistance for your specific situation, I am available for consulting or freelance work so feel free to contact me.

Hi Luke! Thanks for replying.

I do have a bit of previous work with Wordpress, but generally just from leeching off other's work that's available online and setting up basic websites. I've noticed that wordpress is quite heavy, has a lot of flaws and isn't well suited for me in the sense that I want to learn back end php with something lightweight like Laravel/OctoberCMS.

I'm not sure if I'd be a waste of time for you, unless I would I have to pay for consultation, but I would honestly love to speak to you and get a better understanding of what direction I should be heading towards.

Mind if I ask what's the best way of getting in contact with you?

Best approach is to install October and start using it.

Contact me through my website, or join the Slack team and ask there.

If your goal is to learn more of the backend development, definitely go with October. Start by just setting it up like @daftspunk said and start using it.
