there're white bars constantly appearing on either side of the slider, and despite me changing all padding/margins/left/right css values to zero there is still 15px padding. is this included in the padding of the slider and if so how do I remove it?

No, there is no padding included in slider.

It depends on parent wrapper of slider component.

on closer examination of the containing div "slider" there is a margin of 0px, auto, but the browser is rendering a 20px margin left and right but not top and bottom. contrary to what you seem to have written (code wise)?

only time it does not have these margins is when the screen size is less than 200px
