I have tried the sample HTML template but when saved and preview I get the following error:

Uncaught TypeError: slides[(slideIndex - 1)] is undefined showSlides http://myoctober.test:88/themes/test-emplate/assets/javascript/slider.js:25

May I know what is causing that?

Problem solved. I was using version 3 bootstrap javascript. Need to use v4 bootsrap js.
