ES6 and higher have expanded functionality and performance that makes jQuery kind of obsolete.

This is unlikely to happen because so much of the core is built on jQuery, including the entire AJAX framework. We're not going to remove it just because people don't like it. As browser support for newer features becomes better jQuery will continue to become lighter as it switches to using native methods for tasks. I see no reason to put in all the work required to strip it out completely.
