Hello Guys,
I am leroy a junior developer. Just discovered OctoberCMS and i loved it right away. There are already a lot of useful plugins, but im creating a website for my web design business so i need a good portfolio plugin that is easy to use. After struggling around with some basic plugin tutorials and some compare code if found out that it is quite difficult for me to create my own custom plugin without some help.
Maybe there are some of you guys that can help me out a bit, because the portfolio plugin isn't that different from de RainLab Blog plugin except from some extra content fields etc. Is there a startup tutorial including Models, Controllers and Database etc? So yes please let me now.
Greetings,
Leroy Steding
Leroy,
Although OctoberCMS has a community of some really excellent and helpful people, I think you'll find it difficult to get many responses to such a broad ranged post. Which tutorials have you gone through, and what problems are you encountering after going through said tutorials? You said you went through some basic plugin tutorials, by that did you mean "The basics of Plugin building"? http://www.sitepoint.com/building-octobercms-plugins-google-analytics/
If you want to know a bit more about database interaction in a plugin, step up to the advanced "Mastering Components" tutorial. I've found it very helpful. https://vimeo.com/104896353
Now you mentioned that your idea for a portfolio plugin isn't that different from the RainLab Blog plugin, to that I would say either crack open its code and start using it as a guideline to develop your portfolio plugin... or extend it to suit your needs instead (which I'm not sure would be such a great idea in this case, but I could be wrong in my assumption. It has happened.). I would recommend taking a look at "Extending the User Plugin" here: https://vimeo.com/108040919
If you still find difficulty in figuring out what you want to do, by all means throw your question up so we can help you solve it, or if you are patient drop by IRC and say hello. It may take some time to get a response, but it's always an option.
I appreciate the response, i will have a look at the Mastering Components video.
Thanks!
@ndcisv +1 for that "Mastering Components" tutorial, I found it really helpful when I was trying to figure out how to make my own plugins.
You can also install an other plugin, look at the code and see how everything is put together.

I have made several plugins for October, so If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask :)
@Shahiem I have a couple questions about Frontend User Roles Manager waiting on a response in the plugins forum.
@Shahiem I would appreciate if you could answer a question of mine regarding installing plugins: http://octobercms.com/forum/post/error-while-trying-to-install-a-plugin
