- How do you resolve backend 404 errors into actual error messages?

So, currently in the back-end if I do some ajax action that causes an error then I get a pop-up with a 404 message, and non-ajax loads the full 404 page. I know to go to the event log to read these errors, but is there a way to change the 404 to some other message?
