  3. User plugin - inserts email instead of username in the username field

I have navigated to the backend under System > Users > User Settings and changed the Login attribute under the Sign in tab to be Username.

In the register.htm I have added 

<div class="form-group">
    <label for="registerUsername">Username</label>
    <input name="username" type="text" class="form-control" id="registerUsername" placeholder="Choose username">
</div>

But when I register it inserts the email address into the username field?
