I'm working on creating a production environnement with the October back-end. So, I have several remarque on the dashboard and October's menu. In my view the dashbord sould be use to create a user friendly interface managing the website and navigate in it.

  • First, I'm a little bit disappointed to see that I'm unable to drag & drop widgets easily in the dashbord
    • We can drag the widget with the top left corner, but never drop it in the desired place.
    • The feature is already implemented in the builder plugin, I could be great to do the same with the dashboard. The drag & drop create a border ro show were the component will be drop.
  • Then, the dashboad may be use te create alternative entry into plugins. We could get by default a widget to go into the main pluggin backend page.
    • Why ? For instance, I have install around 15 plugins into my october application and each plugin create an element into the backend menu. In my view it is not the good behavior, because it doen't create a friendly interface to manage my application.
    • I also expect not mofied a third plugin, because if the contributor create an update my plugin would be uncompatible.
    • In my view we should be able to manage backend menu to create user perspectives. For instance a webmaster perpective or a dev perspective.

The Great power of October is to reconcile developers and webmasters. We can both work on the same CMS, and with great plugins such as pages or blog we can define a simple workflow. I build the structure, when the webmaster creates the contents. But with the currently environnement, in my view, we can't create a strong production environnement. October I very powerful and a lots of developers like it because we can easily create a web application with basic Html/Css, but in production mode non-developer are not in favor of October because the dashboard is not as strong as other CMS dashboard.

What is your opinion?

  • What do you think about the dashboard?
  • What do you think about the backend menu?
  • How do you Imagine the relationship between devs & webmasters in October?

Features sumary

  • Improve dashborad drag&drop
  • Add backend menu management
    • Hide/show/manage backend menu item
    • different perspective for each user
  • Create menu in dashbord with existing plugins
    • Auto-generate the widget with the builder for instance
