I was annoyed that I had to open the system.log file every time something went wrong, so I setup a file watcher in PhpStorm to notify me when something went wrong.

First, go to File>Settings>Tools>File Watchers. Click the green + icon to add a new watcher. Select Custom as the template. Give your watcher a name. Set Show Console: always and check Trigger watcher regardless of syntax errors

Next click the ... next to Scope, then in the 'Scopes' dialog click the upper left green + icon to add a new scope. Name it 'log' then enter the pattern as file:storage/logs/system.log Click OK.

Set the rest of the options as follows. When you're done click OK to save your watcher. Now any time your system.log file changes PhpStorm will notify you.

File Type: Text
Program: cmd.exe
Arguments: /S /C "type "$FilePath$""
