My host fulfills all the requirements listed here: http://octobercms.com/docs/help/installation#system-requirements

Except for ZipArchive PHP Library. Is that really vital for October to work?

Are you sure about this? It will be listed in phpinfo as Zip not ZipArchive. You could do a local test without it to find out for sure, but I think you need it for unpacking during the installation process.

This requirement also fails for me - even though my AMPPS on my MacBook has it installed : extension=zip.so extension=zlib.so
